Twin Peaks: The Return
Twenty-five years after the murder of Laura Palmer, the story continues. Co-written and directed by David Lynch, Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) is as much a revival as it is a sequel to the original show (1990-91), and the feature film Fire Walk With Me (1992).
Lauded as a groundbreaking, ambitious work of avant-garde storytelling, the series is known for its surreal atmosphere, complex, unconventional narrative, and striking visuals, leading some critics to consider The Return a film, with Cahiers du Cinéma naming it the best film of the decade and the 2022 Sight & Sound critics’ poll voting it the 152nd best films in history.
The Return dives deep into themes that travel through Lynch’s filmography, dealing with uncanny dream logic, shifts in identity, boundaries of reality, trauma, metaphysical horror, as well as redemption.
