Marcello Mastroianni plays Guido Anselmi, a director whose new project, along with his life, is collapsing around him. Urged by his doctors to rest, Guido heads for a luxurious spa to recover. Once there, he is surrounded by journalists, his staff, actors, his producer, his mistress, his wife and her sister, and a critic he’s hired to help him understand his own films, all of them anxious for him to begin shooting the new film. At the heart of 8 1/2 are Guido’s dreams built on memories and fantasies, capturing everything from his youth and the role of the Catholic Church to his desire to be in control of all the women he has yearned for, all leading to the film’s final dream sequence, a great visual metaphor for the process of creation. One of the greatest films about film ever made, Fellini’s 8½ turns one man’s moral and artistic crisis into a grand epic of the cinema. Screening from a brand new 35mm print, and in memory of Claudia Cardinale who passed away earlier this fall.
