In the smog-choked dystopian Los Angeles of 2019, blade runner Rick Deckard is called out of retirement to terminate a quartet of replicants (artificially created humans designed to work on the space colonies) who have escaped to Earth, seeking their creator for a way to extend their programmed short life spans. Wrestling with the question of what it means to be human, the film goes into issues of identity and artificial life, memory and authenticity, and blurred boundaries between creator and created. Ridley Scott’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep changed the look and feel of sf films set in urban environments. 118 min.
