Louise Weard’s labyrinthine, post-modern, lo-fi epic about gender is praised as a triumph in no-budget filmmaking. Michaela ‘Traps’ Sinclair is a trans sex worker trying to get by in Vancouver while also mentoring her recently-out friend Adeline and making an attempt at pursuing actual motherhood. Meanwhile, lowly production assistant Turner finds himself dangerously spiraling into inceldom as his current relationship implodes. Examinining fragmentation of identity, intimacy, and the isolation of contemporary life through a series of disruptive, poetic vignettes, the project handles of trans topics in a nuanced and humorous way. Vera Drew, the director of The People’s Joker, stars as Persephone, one of Traps’ friends.
“There are those at the margins who we don’t want to think about, but who are the same as us. We’re all people, right?” (Louise Weard) Winner of the Audience Award at Frameline Film Festival.
