The police get a call-out to a lonely hotel in the Alps. When an officer arrives at the hotel everything seems to be alright. Suddenly, an avalanche cuts them off from the rest of the world, and strange things start to happen. Written by the Strugatsky Brothers (who wrote the novel that inspired Tarkovsky’s Stalker), this icy genre-bending whodunit has been a long-standing cult classic waiting to happen. The strange, poetic rhythm of the film is reminiscent of the same synth-laden Euro glam sci-fi universe as Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth and Fassbinder’s World on a Wire.
