A married couple and their son and dog show up to their Austrian vacation home when two young men impinge on their privacy, soon taking over, forcing the family into violent games. Funny Games follows the patterns of home invasion stories, including potential escapes, but the perpetrators, rather than the film’s writer, seem to be in control of the narrative, discomforting us when we expect to be thrilled. Geoff Andrews at Time Out Film: “Brilliant, radical, provocative, it’s a masterpiece.” Stephen Holden at The New York Times: “The movie is a really a sophisticated act of cinematic sadism.” You’ll have to decide.
