After Mephisto and Colonel Redl, director István Szabó made a third film with actor Klau Maria Brandauer and cinematographer Lajos Koltai. Brandauer plays Klaus Schneider, a recovering World War I sergeant whose empathy and clairvoyant  abilities help him aid suicidal patients.
