Released six months after Annie Hall, Looking for Mr. Goodbar gives us a very different Diane Keaton. In a compelling and rich performance, she plays a young teacher for the deaf, a good girl by all social standards, who wants to break free of her conservative upbringing. At night she frequents single bars, seeking sexual liberation. She faces not only her own insecurities but a range of problematic men with their own concepts of sexuality. When first released, viewers were split: is this a film that punishes a woman for seeking pleasure or a film that dramatizes the challenges and dangers facing a woman seeking sexual freedom? In memory of Diane Keaton.
