We welcome our members for an end-of-year free screening to celebrate their support of the Cinematheque! Freddie, a socially awkward bank clerk, finds the feelings of comfort and control missing in his life in collecting butterflies. When he comes into a large sum of money and buys himself a country house, he starts to plan on acquiring a girlfriend – in the same manner as he collects butterflies, hoping to win her affection throughout her captivity. Looking at obsession and the dark side of romantic fantasy, William Wyler’s adaptation of John Fowles’s novel has been praised for its tension, psychological potency, and performances (Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggar won the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress at Cannes Film Festival). Screening in memory of Terence Stamp, who passed away earlier this year. 119 min.
