Barry Hines, who co-wrote three early Ken Loach films, scripted this movie based on director Mick Jackson’s extensive research of what could take place in Britain after a nuclear war. We follow a couple and their two families of different social classes as they struggle to survive in a Sheffield that had already been ravaged by Thatcherite labor policies. Unlike Peter Watkin’s War Game and Nicholas Meyer’s The Day After, which only follow the immediate months after the war, Threads also jumps head ten years to be the first film to explore the effects of nuclear winter. “No one ever forgets the experience of watching Threads. […It] is arguably the most devastating piece of television ever produced. It’s perfectly crafted, totally human and…completely harrowing” –Jonathan Hatfull, SciFiNow.
