Director: Joseph Cates Run Time: 94 min. Format: 35mm Release Year: 1965

Starring: Elaine Stritch, Jan Murray, Juliet Prowse, Margot Bennett, Sal Mineo

The apex of lurid ’60s exploitation movies and a virtual smorgasbord of Hollywood taboos. Jan Murray plays a grim NYC police detective who embarks on a one-man crusade to track down a sexual predator after a nightclub hostess receives a disturbing series of obscene phone calls. Rebuked on release by both critics and the Catholic Church, this lean, libidinous thriller is at last beginning to be cherished, as both a document of 1960s Times Square and a timeless catalog of sexual proclivities. Starring Sal Mineo, Juliet Prowse, and Elaine Stritch, this new 35mm print of Cates’ original director’s cut, unseen in nearly 60 years, includes over 5 minutes of censored material (cut from the 1965 release prints and some versions currently streaming), revealing, among other things, a deeper exploration of the Mineo character’s true sexuality.
