Perhaps John Schlesinger’s boldest film, The Day of the Locust, is a film about the way Hollywood lures people in and can spit them out. William Atherton stars as an art director who falls for an aspiring young actress (Karen Black) in 1930s Hollywood. The stunning cinematography by Conrad L. Hall and incredible production design and art direction by Richard Macdonald and John J. Lloyd capture the period perfectly. The chilling performance by Donald Sutherland, and one of cinema’s most unforgettable endings make The Day of the Locust stay with an audience long after the final credits roll. “Under John Schlesinger’s direction, The Day of the Locust is memorable in scene after scene.” – Kevin Kelly, Boston Globe.
