In John Schlesinger’s rarely screened, and beautifully shot, WWII drama, several U.S. soldiers stationed in England find themselves entangled with local women. Starring Richard Gere, Vanessa Redgrave, William Devane, and Lisa Eichhorn, Yanks captures a quieter side of the war. Despite Schlesinger receiving the National Board of Review’s Best Director award, Yanks was far better received in his native U.K. (where it received 7 BAFTA nominations including Best Picture) than in the U.S. “Yanks remains an unusually appealing and ingratiating movie.” – Gary Arnold, Washington Post.
