A comedy of errors starring W.C. Fields as a hen-pecked, inebriated inventor who triumphantly creates unbreakable windshield glass while struggling to gain the respect of his social-climbing daughter and nagging wife. Known as one of Field’s best silent comedies, the film also gives him the opportunity to display his dramatic chops. When La Cava and Fields were first on set, they could not stand each other. Two weeks later, their opinions were tempered: “I hate his guts,” La Cava said, “but he’s the greatest comedian that ever lived.” Fields responded, “I can’t stand the bastard, but he’s the best director in the business.”
Live musical accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis.
